Revolutionising Shoulder Surgery: VIP™ Planning Takes Centre Stage at MASSH

On 3rd of July 2025, MASSH Hospital in Chirag Enclave hosted a session with leading orthopaedic professionals, spotlighting the innovative VIP™ (Virtual Implant Positioning) system, a cutting-edge tool transforming preoperative planning in shoulder arthroplasty at MASSH.

Held within the academic premises of the hospital, the CME provided an interactive and evidence-based environment for surgeons and residents to dive into the importance of 3D planning in shoulder surgeries. The session opened up discussions around the enhanced accuracy and predictability offered by the VIP™ system, especially in anatomically complex cases.

Participants explored how the VIP™ system uses DICOM-format CT scans to convert 2D imaging into 3D models, correcting views in the scapular plane and aligning with Friedman’s Line for glenoid component placement. Through real-time digital planning, our surgeons are able to uncover osteophytes, deformities, or hidden bone loss even before entering the OT leading to better implant selection and placement.

A highlight of the CME was a practical deep-dive into the VIP™ Targeter, a reusable, patient-specific guide that brings the surgical plan to life in the OR. Attendees gained clarity on how this intraoperative tool reduces variability in pin placement and enhances overall surgical precision.

Dr. Abhishek Bansal, Director – Orthopaedics, Spine & Sports Injury and speaker for the event, emphasized that preoperative planning using VIP™ is not just a tool but a game-changer in surgical decision-making. He cited compelling data from global studies demonstrating improved outcomes, fewer revision surgeries, and greater alignment accuracy thanks to patient-specific instrumentation.

"VIP™ isn’t just planning. It’s precision redefined.
By transforming 2D scans into 3D reality, it reveals what X-rays miss.
It empowers us to correct complexities before we even cut.
The result? Fewer revisions, better outcomes, and smarter surgeries."

The success of this Event highlighted MASSH Hospital’s ongoing commitment to medical excellence and education. By bringing such technologies to the forefront, we continue to empower the orthopaedic community to deliver safer, smarter, and more effective surgical care.
