Patient Success Story: Emergency Bariatric Treatment at MASSH PROLIFE Hospital, Ludhiana

A Critical Emergency Situation

A 19-year-old young man weighing 150 kg with a height of 5ft and a BMI score of 64.9 was brought to the emergency department in a life-threatening condition. He was experiencing severe breathing difficulty, had limited mobility, and required oxygen support even during sleep.

In addition to extreme obesity, he was also dealing with depression, anxiety, and night eating disorder, making his condition more complex and challenging to manage. His family was urgently searching for specialised medical care that could stabilise him and address the underlying causes of his health condition.

Finding the Right Support

During this difficult time, the family explored treatment options through digital platforms and came across MASSH PROLIFE Hospital.

They found clarity and reassurance through:

• Patient-centered treatment information

• Awareness about bariatric care pathways

• A multidisciplinary approach including nutrition, mental health, and post-treatment care

This helped them understand the importance of specialised bariatric intervention in such complex cases.

Timely Referral and Transfer

Recognising the severity of the situation, the treating hospital coordinated with Dr. Harpreet Singh Jolly, Senior Bariatric Surgeon at MASSH PROLIFE Hospital.

A carefully planned and timely transfer was arranged. The patient was stabilised with oxygen support and continuous monitoring before being shifted to Ludhiana for advanced evaluation and care.

Multidisciplinary Evaluation and Stabilisation

Upon arrival, the patient was assessed by Dr. Harpreet Singh Jolly and a multidisciplinary team. A structured care plan was initiated, focusing on both immediate stabilisation and long-term management.

The approach included:

• Emergency Stabilisation: Oxygen therapy and respiratory monitoring

• Comprehensive Assessment: Evaluation of physical, metabolic, and psychological health

• Nutritional Support: Addressing dietary patterns and deficiencies

• Psychological Care: Support for anxiety, depression, and eating behaviour

• Family Counselling: Ensuring informed decision-making and emotional support

Treatment and Recovery Progress

Following stabilisation and evaluation, the patient was initiated on a structured bariatric treatment plan.

Over the course of treatment and early recovery:

• Breathing improved significantly

• Mobility and energy levels increased

• Sleep quality showed noticeable improvement

• Overall physical and mental health began stabilising

At a 6-day follow-up after discharge, the patient had already lost approximately 10 kg, marking an encouraging early milestone in his recovery journey.

This case underlines the importance of early intervention, specialised care, and a multidisciplinary approach in managing complex obesity-related conditions.

With the right medical guidance, structured treatment, and continuous follow-up, patients can work towards improved health outcomes and a better quality of life.
